2025/6/14 "From Nest To Shore"

In celebration of the World Sea Turtle Day for our flippered friends, Aquatic Animal Virtopsy Lab and Hong Kong Maritime Museum co-organized the first “Sea Turtle Workshop: From Nest to Shore” on 14 June.

We felt so blessed that the workshop was proceeded as planned during a typhoon signal no. 3 afternoon, with the supports from over 100 participants, filled up the entire lecture hall completely.

In conjunction with leading scientists in the field, we unraveled the mysteries of sea turtle life cycle across countries and oceans. Aside from the perils of marine debris, we leanrt their notable anatomical adaptations for an aquatic life and protection, less male hatchlings due to the rising global temperatures, the ritual respect and offer (wine and rice) to sacred sea turtle by Haenyeo (Korean: 해녀; English: sea women) in Jeju Island, Korea.

Worldwide, conservation efforts in protecting habitats and nests have helped many sea turtles to rebound. But sea turtles are still endangered and further research is needed to ensure their survival. Everyone could contribute to sea turtle conservation, from reducing waste at source to citizen science. Your participation is essential, and we welcome you all to be part of our team!
